Arachne is a full-screen Internet suite containing a graphical web browser, email client, and dialer for DOS running on IBM PC compatible computers. Development of Arachne started by Michael Polak, xChaos software. First beta, Arachne 1.0beta2, released on December 22 1996. The first production release, Arachne 1.02 - April 30 1997 [ 1 ]. The last version from the original developer, renamed by then from xChaos software to Arachne Labs, was Arachne 1.70R3 for DOS released 22 January 2001. Since 2003 Arachne is developed and released as GPL version.
Features: HTML 3.2 with a subset of HTML 4.0 [ 2 ] [ 3 ]. Some CSS 1.0. BMP, GIF (static and animated), JPG and PNG images. HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP, Gopher. But not HTTPS/SSL/TLS.
Arachne supports various languages. Windows-1251 and KOI8-R Cyrillic are supported after additional packages are installed. UTF-8 support is rather tentative. Internet connection is via serial ports (COM) and Ethernet.
Maximum screen resolution normally is 1024x768x16bpp. But much more is also possible in some [ 4 ] cases.
